Vick and Christa Conway met at a horse show. It was probably sometime in the 70s (no, they are not that old....they just met when they were really young.) They really did, their families both competed at horse shows (the contesting shows) in the Midwest, mostly Indiana and surrounding states. Christa had a crush on Vick when she was nine and he was 14......you'll have to ask them about the rest of the story sometime.
Vick was riding horses and competing as just a child. His father, Larry, and mother, Sandy, used to travel around with VIck and his sisters on the weekends. Sandy would care for the kids and cook for them (and sometimes many others) while the boys would take care of the horses and Vick would compete.
Vick had several good horses growing up. One sentimental favorite was "Black Boy Bailey" otherwise known as "Booger." The black horse named Booger and Vick won many titles and championships in the early 80s, including the Indiana Barrel Sweepstakes. Booger was sold to Jimmy Warner who went on to win lots of money before Booger made his final home in Canada where he continued to set arena records and win for his owners. Vick also had a nice mare he called "Reba" that won the Kentucky Pole Bending Futurity as a 3 year old.
Christa came from a whole family of barrel racers. Her grandfather, Jim Pitcock was a legend in his own time in Indiana. He won the World Championship Flag Race in 1976, the Indiana Quarter Horse Racing Futurity in 1968, he was inducted into the Horseman's Hall of Fame and won several titles over his career.
Christa's mom and dad both competed and also met at the horse shows while their families were hauling to competitions. Debby Garling, Christa's mom has been a state champion in the Indiana NBHA several times and also a champion in the CRA and GBRA-I several times. She placed 3rd at the NBHA World show 1st Division in the Seniors her only time to make the trip to Georgia.
Christa has also competed since she was a small child. She competed in the Pee Wees and eventually the youth on her own horses. She later got to compete in the youth classes on her mom's tough horses. By the time she was 16, she was training her own and had a nice mare that was out of her Grandfather's good mare, Pocos Flossie, and a stallion named Angel of the Morn. The little roan mare who was named "Angel's Flossie," or affectionately known as "Roany," took Christa to many wins, including her first rodeo win. Christa was hooked and once she was in a position to rodeo, she knew she would give it a try on a professional level.
Vick and Christa were married in 1993 and continued their winning ways with futurity winners to rodeo champions. Vick has made the Finals at Fort Smith and OKC, won fastest time awards and saddles and Christa has qualified for the International Finals Rodeo as well as won All Around Titles and several saddles over the years in different organizations.
The experience gained from so many years between them has created a great team. The two work great together when it comes to training horses. Many of the horses they have trained have went on to be winners for others. VIck is also great at matching horses with riders and has matched up some very tough teams including some State Champions.
The couple has two children that are following in their footsteps and who are consuming much of their time and dictating where the spend their time on the road. The kids have many wins between the two of them and have qualified for the NBHA World Championships several times.
The couple is involved in many other aspects of the Horse Industry. Vick is a licensed auctioneer and has probably been seen at a tack sale or horse auction more than a few times. More recently they have embarked on launching The Horse Resource Magazine. Christa takes care of the graphic design for the magazine and also offers graphic design work and web-design on a freelance basis.
The couple are also branching out into the breeding industry with the purchase of their stallion, First to Shake Six. "Six" is an own son of the late First Down Dash and has an extraordinary female line. His Dam, Shake Em Six was AQHA's Broodmare of the Year.
VC Ranch offers a few select horses for sale at all times and do take a few outside horses for training as time allows.
Vick and Christa are dedicated to their God and their family. They put Jesus first and know that it is through Him that all things are possible.
The Conway's can't wait to see where God takes them in the next few years. Wherever it is, they are sure it will be a great ride.
